Gowrie NSW is inviting Dubbo locals to unleash their creativity and get involved with its first community art project, as the organisation prepares to further extend its reach in the area.

Gowrie NSW has commissioned local community arts worker and owner of The Basement Studio, Brigid Palin, to facilitate the art project that will result in a large-scale permanent mosaic mural to be displayed in a new education hub currently under development in West Dubbo.

Ms Palin, together with other locals, community worker Lionel Wood and artist Lisa Orth, will hold the mosaic workshops over two days at The Basement Studio in Dubbo, where they will collaborate with the local community on two 600mm x 4m mosaic murals. Community members will also have the opportunity to create a small mosaic piece that they can take home.

Historical and cultural elements of the local area will be taken into account for the design of the large-scale mosaic mural, with careful attention also to be given to surrounding structures, the community and natural landscape.

“This public art project aims to celebrate and foster the strong community spirit that Dubbo is renowned for,” Ms Palin said. “I am excited to be working with Gowrie NSW as they have a strong reputation for strengthening and building communities through support of many community focused projects.”

Ms Palin said creative community art projects such as this one have proven to be successful in getting communities together to build unity and share skills.

“The fun and free activity also decreases stress and encourages people to take time out, learn something new,” she added.

Gowrie NSW Manager of Education and Care, Rose Todd, said Gowrie is thrilled to be a part of the Dubbo community and to be partnering with Brigid and other local artists.

“The mosaic project is an opportunity for Dubbo residents to come along and express themselves through art and to contribute to a finished piece of work that will be exhibited in the area,” Ms Todd said.

The workshops will be held on the 11th and 18th of September at The Basement Studio, located at 39-41 Macquarie St Dubbo. Places are limited so be sure to register early.
