“Every thinking person must realise that when this bitter strife is over, we must build a better world, and it’s only through children that this can be done.” Lady Zara Gowrie, 1941.
Last year marked the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Lady Gowrie Child Centres in 1940 by Lady Zara Gowrie, the wife of the 10th Governor General.
In honour of our 75th anniversary, Gowrie NSW is launching ‘Gowrie NSW- celebrating 75 years’, a history book written by Associate Professor Frances Press and Dr Sandie Wong that is a celebration of the passion and commitment of all Gowrie educators, past and present.
Natalie Grenfell, Chief Executive Officer of Gowrie NSW, said over the decades our organisation has played a significant advocacy role and has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to delivering high-quality care for young children across the state.
“This book has been written to document our journey since founding, and to enable us to share how, over time, our organisation has changed from a single demonstration child research centre to managing and supporting a very diverse and dynamic range of programs for children, families and sector professionals across NSW and ACT,” Ms Grenfell said.
Our focus, from establishment in 1940, was on research and leadership, with a demonstration centre established at Erskineville. Though a very different organisation and much more diverse than it was in 1940, the continuing thread of providing quality care, standing by the children, families and communities is the 75 year legacy Gowrie NSW carries into its values today.
“Today, Gowrie NSW not only contributes to early and middle childhood in NSW but influences national conversations as a member of Gowrie Australia,” Ms Grenfell said.
The history book tells a story of change and adaption; including changes in name, funding sources, management, programs and clientele and how this dynamic organisation adapted and extended its programs to respond to the needs of families, especially those facing difficult circumstances.
To celebrate the launch of the history book Gowrie NSW is holding a book launch event at Swanson Hotel, Erskineville on 30 May 2016.
