Children's Charter: Our Commitment to Children's Rights

Every family who walks through our doors asks the same questions, just in different ways.

"Is my child safe here? Will they be happy? Will someone notice them, really notice them, when I'm not there?"

These aren't small questions. They're the ones that keep families up at night, especially in the early weeks. And they deserve a real answer.

The Gowrie NSW Children's Charter of Rights is that answer. It sets out our commitment to upholding the rights, voices and wellbeing of every child in our care, every single day.

Developed in genuine consultation with children, families, educators and our wider team, it puts clear language and real standards to something we've always believed: that children are capable people who deserve to be heard, respected and valued.

Here's what the Charter means for your child.

The right to feel safe and loved

Safety is our first responsibility. Not just physical safety, but emotional and psychological safety too.

When children feel genuinely safe, they learn to trust, form meaningful relationships and take the kind of brave, curious risks that fuel real learning. A child who knows they are loved and protected is free to explore and learn.

Our educators prioritise connection above everything else - being present, warm and responsive to each child's individual needs and taking sensitive observation seriously.

The right to play and learn

Play isn't what children do instead of learning. It is how they learn.

Through play, children make sense of the world, develop creativity, build relationships and grow the skills they'll carry for life. Research consistently shows that child-led, play-based learning builds stronger foundations than formal instruction in the early years.

Our educators design flexible, responsive environments built around children’s interests and ideas. Your child is an active participant in their own learning, not a passenger in someone else’s plan.

The right to be included and belong

Belonging matters. Children who feel genuinely part of their community are more confident, more resilient and better equipped to engage with others. Belonging is the foundation for confidence, identity and wellbeing.

Every child at Gowrie NSW is known, understood and valued.  Regardless of background, ability or identity, every child is empowered to participate fully in the life of the centre. Our educators actively celebrate each child’s culture, language and identity, because feeling free to be yourself is not a bonus. It’s a right.

For families from diverse backgrounds, this commitment is real and ongoing. We don’t just acknowledge difference – we celebrate it.

The right to express myself and be heard

Children communicate in so many ways: through words, movement, creativity, play, gesture and more. This right recognises that all of those voices matter and should be listened to.

When children trust that their feelings, ideas and preferences are genuinely welcomed, they develop confidence in their own perspective. That confidence doesn’t stay in the classroom…it shapes how they navigate the world.

Our educators listen deeply and respond intentionally to every form of expression. Your child’s voice is taken seriously at every age.

I have a right to have influence

Children aren't passive participants in their own lives. They're capable thinkers and active contributors.

When we trust children to shape decisions that affect their daily experience, they grow in confidence, resilience and a genuine sense of agency. They begin to understand that what they think and feel matters, and that they have the ability to make a difference.

Our educators invite children's voices into real decisions. Not as a token gesture, but as a genuine commitment to the kind of early education that prepares children for life.

Turning words into action

The Charter isn't a policy document that sits in a folder. It shapes how we design our spaces, how our educators show up each day and how we work in partnership with families across every Gowrie NSW centre.

When you choose Gowrie NSW, you’re choosing a team that holds itself accountable to these rights, every day. We believe children flourish when they feel safe, heard and valued. And we believe families deserve to know exactly what this looks like in practice.
