Supporting a Culture of Visual Communication in Early Learning Settings (4- part series)

This 4-part workshop series will introduce and explore the use of a range of visual communication strategies to help create a culture of inclusive, multimodal communication within your early learning setting.

Encompassing non-verbal communication strategies such as through to gesture, key word sign and printed visual communication supports, sessions will be practical, engaging and hands-on.  

 

Series Outline:

In each session we will explore meaningful ways to incorporate key word sign, gesture and printed communication resources into daily activities and interactions. Practical activities will provide opportunity to practice using various methods of multimodal communication within functional activities including, Sing and Sign, Play and Sign and Read and Sign.  

Session 1 you will:

  • explore visual communication strategies involving use of the body 

  • learn common key word signs and gestures for use early learning settings 

  • explore key elements of visual supports  

  • participate in a practical application of visual strategies – Sing, Sign and Symbols 

 

Session 2 you will:

  • revise signs and gestures previously learned 

  • learn key word sign and gestures to support routines and play  

  • use a range of visual supports to support routines and play  

  • participate in a practical application of visual strategies – Play, Sign and Symbols 

 

Session 3 you will:

  • revise signs and gestures previously learned 

  • learn key word sign and gestures to support literacy and numeracy  

  • use a range of visual supports to support literacy and numeracy  

  • participate in a practical application of visual strategies – Read, Sign and Symbols 

 

Session 4 you will:

  • revise signs and gestures previously learned 

  • explore ways to embed key word sign and visual supports into daily activities 

  • discuss and problem solve strategies to create, sustain and develop a culture of visual communication in your home or service
