OSHC Communication and Interactive Supervision (2-part series)

In this 2-part series, you will explore the link between communication and supervision, and how intentional interactions can create safe, engaging, and empowering environments for children. You will examine common communication challenges, learn practical strategies to overcome them, and understand how to balance active supervision with meaningful engagement.

Session Outline:

Session 1:

Communication and interactive supervision

This session explores how our identities and perspectives influence the way we communicate and interact in educational settings, including the critical distinction between active and interactive supervision. Educators will examine different types of communication, the role of feedback, and factors that can interfere with effective engagement with children.

Learning outcomes:

  • Identify how personal identities and perspectives shape communication and interaction.
  • Understand the two types of communication and the role of feedback in team cohesion.
  • Recognise common interferences that can affect effective engagement with children.

Session 2:

Communication and interactive supervision

Building on Part 1, this session looks at how impressions and life experiences shape communication and supervision. Educators will explore active listening strategies, the link between internal processes and external behaviours, and the We Belong Education C.A.R.E framework to strengthen relationships and foster children’s sense of belonging.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Explore how impressions and life experiences influence supervision and communication.
  • Apply active listening strategies to reduce misunderstandings and strengthen connections.
  • Understand the relationship between internal processes and external behaviours.
  • Learn how to use the C.A.R.E framework to create positive, inclusive environments.
