Nurturing positive reading identities through picture books and shared reading, with Dr Amanda Niland (2-part series)

Join us for this workshop that will focus on supporting children to develop a love of reading and for books, as well as early literacy skills through joyful encounters with quality literature and literacy experiences.

This workshop will focus on supporting children to develop a love reading and for books, as well as early literacy skills, through joyful encounters with quality literature and literacy experiences.

In this workshop we will look closely at how picture books work, and the many ways in which they offer children rich possibilities for literacy development. You will build your understanding of how to identify high-quality literature and share effective strategies for shared reading experiences.

Links will be made with Early Years Learning Framework V2.0 and the Australian Curriculum - Early Stage 1. Participants will engage in goal setting that is responsive to their individual early childhood contexts and children.

Participants will also be invited to a follow-up one hour Zoom meeting to share and reflect on progress, ask questions and engage in an interactive and collaborative session.

In this series of workshops, you will:

  • explore how words and illustrations work together to convey meaning in picture books
  • explore the ways in which picture books can support early literacy curriculums
  • build your understanding of the characteristics of high-quality picture books
  • apply this knowledge to analysing picture books within your workplace and develop literacy-learning strategies based around high-quality picture books
  • set individual goals for your own early literacy pedagogy based around high-quality picture books
  • share reflections and progress in relation to your individual goals.
