NOWRA Regional: Introducing Visual Communication and Key Word Sign

Join Tanya Jarvis for a hands-on exploration of Key Word Sign - a simple, evidence-informed strategy that supports children's speech, language and communication.

Have you ever wondered how pairing a sign with your words could open up new possibilities for the children in your care?

Designed for early childhood educators and professionals, this workshop explores how visual communication can be woven into everyday early years practice to foster inclusion, connection and belonging for all children.

Together, you'll explore what Key Word Sign is, who benefits from using it, and how it works alongside other communication approaches - including how it differs from Auslan. You'll leave with practical signs you can use straight away, and the confidence and resources to keep building your skills back in your setting.

In this workshop, participants will:

  • Explain what Key Word Sign is and who can benefit from using it
  • Describe how Key Word Sign can support speech, language and communication
  • Describe how Key Word Sign can be used alongside other methods of communication
  • Understand ways in which Key Word Sign is different to Auslan
  • Know where to find resources to support your learning
