Loose Parts - Inspiring Play in Children (2-part series)

In this workshop, participants will explore a wide variety of loose parts, learn the value of loose parts, discover how to incorporate loose parts into the learning environment, and gain an understanding of how loose parts support curriculum and children’s development. Participants will take away an understanding of how loose parts promote active learning, deepen critical thinking, promote divergent and creative thinking, and support the developmental domains.

In Part 1 of this workshop series, participants will explore a wide variety of loose parts, learn the value of loose parts, discover how to incorporate loose parts into the learning environment, and gain an understanding of how loose parts support curriculum and children’s development. Participants will take away an understanding of how loose parts promote active learning, deepen critical thinking, promote divergent and creative thinking, and support the developmental domains.  

In Part 2 of this workshop series, Lisa will address frequently asked questions about loose parts in programs, such as how to introduce, store, ensure safety, and clean loose parts. There will be opportunity to discuss questions or barriers you have concerning loose parts in your program.  

 

Learning Outcomes: 

  • Explore and discover a variety of loose parts. 
  • Describe how loose parts support play and active learning. 
  • Appraise how loose parts promote critical, creative, and divergent thinking.  
  • Articulate how loose parts support children’s growth in the social-emotional, cognitive, creative, and physical domains.  

 

Expectations: 

  • Recognise play as central to whole child learning and development. 
  • Incorporate opportunities for open-ended exploration and active learning. 
  • Keep learning spaces flexible and materials open-ended. 
  • Design natural environments that engage children’s senses. 
  • Build and enrich thoughtfully designed play spaces with upcycled materials and natural loose parts.  
  • Support equitable learning.  

 

Action and Reflection 

Before the second session, complete the following:  

  • Reflect upon your current feelings about implementing loose parts into your program. What are you excited or apprehensive about?  
  • Add a “Can’t Miss” loose part to your learning environment and observe children’s engagement. 
  • Reflect upon what excites, worries, or concerns you about the children’s play.
