Safe, supportive spaces for growing independence
The toddler years are full of change - children are on the move, finding their voice, and eager to explore the world around them. We love that energy and that independence...and we embrace this exciting stage with care, respect and intentional teaching.
We see toddlers as capable and curious learners. They’re beginning to assert their independence, yet still rely on secure relationships to feel safe and confident. That’s why we balance freedom and structure - providing nurturing relationships alongside routines that help toddlers feel secure.
Building trust through primary educator relationships
Strong relationships are at the heart of our toddler program. Every child is supported by a Primary Educator, who becomes a familiar, trusted presence throughout the day. These consistent relationships help toddlers feel seen, understood and supported as they navigate big emotions, new social skills, and moments of discovery.
With your toddler’s Primary Educator leading their daily routines, transitions and play, children experience a strong sense of emotional safety and connection - the foundation for lifelong learning.
Learning through play, movement and relationships
Toddlers learn by doing - through movement, hands-on play, social interaction and imitation. Our educators provide engaging, safe spaces where toddlers are free to:
- Explore and take age-appropriate risks
- Build physical confidence and coordination
- Make choices and express ideas
- Interact with peers and practise social skills
We slow down and observe closely, allowing toddlers to take the lead in their play while offering gentle guidance, encouragement, and meaningful feedback.
Our Learning Environments
Toddlers are active learners, full of energy, ideas and determination. At Gowrie NSW, we create learning environments that are an invitation to play and learn, places where toddlers feel safe to explore, express themselves and build independence.
We understand that toddlers learn best through meaningful, self-directed play. When children feel emotionally secure and connected to their educators, they are more confident to take risks, solve problems and engage deeply with the world around them.
Open-ended resources are always within reach so toddlers can make choices and explore on their terms. This builds confidence and supports their growing ability to lead their own play.
The Environment as a Co-Teacher
At Gowrie NSW, we see the environment as more than a backdrop. It plays an active role in your child’s learning. Educators observe closely, follow the child’s lead and respond with intention. This happens throughout the day, whether during shared play, quiet transitions or everyday care routines.
Both indoor and outdoor spaces give toddlers opportunities to climb, build, carry, dig and move freely. These experiences support physical development and encourage a strong sense of autonomy.
What a Day Looks Like for Toddlers
A day of discovery, connection and confidence
Each day is guided by strong relationships, predictable routines and a deep respect for each child’s growing independence. We balance structure with flexibility, allowing toddlers to lead their learning while feeling safe, supported and free to explore.
-
Morning drop-off is a time for reconnection. Your toddler is greeted by their primary educator, who helps to ease the transition from home to our learning space. We take the time to connect with both you and your child, sharing updates and setting a calm tone for the day ahead. This consistency builds trust and helps your child settle into their environment with confidence.
-
As the morning unfolds, toddlers are ready to move, investigate and connect. Some dive straight into play, while others might need a little more support before fully engaging. Educators observe closely, responding to each child’s energy, emotions and interests. Our environments are set up to encourage exploration and choice - with open-ended materials, sensory experiences and opportunities to build social skills. Whether it’s carrying, climbing, building or role-playing, toddlers are learning through every moment.
-
After rest time, we support each child as they wake and rejoin the flow of the day. Some toddlers bounce back into play, while others need a quiet moment, a cuddle, or space to reorient. We allow children to move at their own pace, without rushing. As part of their growing independence, toddlers are encouraged to take small steps in self-help - like helping to pack away rest items or choosing what to play with next. These moments build confidence and a sense of ownership.
-
Reflecting and Connecting As the day draws to a close, we support toddlers through a smooth and calm transition back to family life. Educators help children gather their belongings and get ready for pick-up. Primary Educators share highlights of the day and any key updates, keeping you connected and informed. We know that the end of the day can sometimes feel big and busy for toddlers. Our educators stay close, offering reassurance, calm interactions and meaningful engagement - right until the moment they head home.

First 1000 days
The first 1000 days are of critical importance in a child’s life. This spans from conception to around 3 years old. This time is crucial for brain development and significantly influences children's future outcomes. A child’s environment, particularly the love and positive interactions they receive, plays a vital role in their brain development. It’s not just about genetics; the experiences and interactions during these early days are fundamental, both at home and in our early learning settings.
At Gowrie NSW, we focus on creating safe, secure and supported environments. This nurturing experience for children helps in their holistic development and a resilient brain, setting the foundation for lifelong learning and well-being.

Our Approach to Early Learning
