Reimagining the Outdoors (3-Part Series)

Join Caitlin Mulroyan in this inspiring three-part series reimagining the outdoors as a powerful space for learning, belonging, and growth.

This series supports educators in rethinking outdoor learning as a meaningful and integral part of the curriculum. Beyond spaces for physical play, it highlights the outdoors potential to ignite curiosity, creativity, resilience, and deep learning through inquiry and connection to place.

Through discussion and practical examples, participants explore how everyday natural environments can inspire inquiry and connection. Grounded in place-based perspectives, the series encourages reflection on relationships between people, land, and community.

In this series of workshops, you will deepen your connection to nature, ecological thinking, place-based pedagogy, and courageous play.

Session One

Learning in Nature

Explores how outdoor environments can become rich, dynamic spaces for inquiry, creativity, and deep learning. Educators are invited to see nature as an active partner in the learning process.

 In this workshop you will:

  • Recognise and utilise outdoor environments as rich contexts for inquiry-based learning alongside nature and all it has to offer
  • Identify practical ways to explore creativity and engagement through everyday nature experiences.

Session Two

Growing an Ecological Identity

Focuses on nurturing children’s sense of belonging and connection to the natural world. Through everyday experiences, children begin to see themselves as part of, and responsible for, the ecosystems around them.

In this workshop you will:

  • Explore strategies to foster children’s sense of belonging and connection to the natural world.
  • Reflect on how relationships with land and place shape children’s understanding of sustainability and care.

Session Three

Courageous Play

Highlights the importance of risk-taking, challenge, and resilience in outdoor play. Educators learn to support children in navigating uncertainty, building confidence, and developing a strong sense of capability.

In this workshop you will:

  • Develop confidence in adult-supported risk-taking and challenge in outdoor play and how this builds skill, confidence and positive learner dispositios.
  • Identify approaches to nurture resilience, independence, and a strong sense of capability in children.
