Planning and setting up spaces for learning must begin with our understandings of the child and the messages that our environments communicate. Does our space reflect a vision of the child as capable and competent? Is the space an enabler for play based learning? Are children able to take risks and drive their learning?
Key focus areas of this workshop include
- Reflecting on the message that the learning environment evokes to tune into the holistic dimensions of the space
- Considering the relationships between people, places and things in the learning environment as fundamental to inclusive practice
- Reviewing key research about ‘Risky Play’ in early childhood
- Ideas for obtaining resources and materials including loose parts, upcycling and nature-based resources
